Ongoing Updates: The Landing School

Update on The Landing School’s 2026-27 Academic Programs

August 3, 2026

We are writing to share an important update regarding The Landing School of Boatbuilding & Design. We regret to announce that the Board of Trustees has voted to cease academic programs for 2026-27, as the Board continues to evaluate the institution’s future.

Previously, The Landing School had announced its intent to explore the possibility of an acquisition that could continue The Landing School’s operations and mission. After careful consideration, the Board of Trustees determined that this option was not viable.

We understand that this has been a difficult and confusing sequence of events for our students, faculty, staff, and community. In exploring an acquisition, the Board of Trustees felt a responsibility to pursue every reasonable effort to find a path forward. Our priority now is supporting our enrolled students, faculty, and staff through next steps.

The Landing School will provide a full refund of deposits and consider reimbursement for certain expenses on a case-by-case basis. Incoming students will be contacted by admissions for further guidance.

The Landing School will also work with incoming students to identify other education opportunities where appropriate and provide documentation that may assist with the transfer of their education plans. The student orientation that was scheduled for September 8 will not take place.

We are so proud of the work The Landing School has accomplished in the almost fifty years since first accepting and teaching students in the art of boatbuilding and we hope those accomplishments can continue to be celebrated.

We are grateful to all who have stood by The Landing School throughout this difficult period. We know how much this school has meant to so many people, and we remain committed to managing this process with care and responsibility.

Sincerely,

John Caron
President

Susan Swanton
Chair, Board of Trustees

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Landing School closing?

The Board of Trustees has not reached a final decision to permanently close The Landing School. The school will cease academic programs for the 2026-27 academic year while the Board continues to evaluate the institution’s future.

Why is this happening?

For nearly 50 years, The Landing School has prepared students for successful careers in the marine industry through immersive, hands-on education. Throughout its history, the school continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the marine industry while remaining committed to its educational mission.

Like many small, mission-driven institutions across higher education, The Landing School has experienced declining enrollments over several years. Combined with rising operating costs and broader demographic and economic changes affecting higher education, these enrollment challenges created financial pressures that became increasingly difficult to overcome.

I thought The Landing School was exploring being acquired. What has changed?

In exploring an acquisition, the Board felt a responsibility to pursue every reasonable effort to find a path forward. After careful consideration, the Board of Trustees determined that this option was not viable.

Does this mean students can still apply for future academic years?

At this time, The Landing School is not accepting applications for future academic years. Any updates about future academic programming or admissions will be shared on The Landing School website at www.landingschool.edu.

Will I receive a refund of my deposit?

Yes. Incoming students who submitted a deposit for the 2026-27 academic year will receive a full deposit refund. Additional information regarding the refund process will be communicated to students soon.

What if I have already incurred expenses?

Yes. The Landing School will work with incoming students to identify education opportunities with other institutions where appropriate and provide documentation that may assist with the transfer of your education plans.

I have more questions. Who should I contact?

Our Admissions office will be contacting incoming students to provide further guidance. Students may also send questions to admissions@landingschool.edu.
