Position Title: Woodworking Instructor - part time

Compensation/Rate: class fees split 50-50 between instructor and Factory 3; instructor earns between $55 and $68/hour for a 4-hour class

Location: Portland, ME

Position Summary:

Factory 3, a makerspace at 105 Saint James Street in Portland, is seeking a part-time woodworking instructor for an Intro to Woodshop class taught in our facility. The class is currently scheduled on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm, twice per month, with two instructors taking turns teaching the class. Additional sessions can be added, including at different times, upon agreement between Factory 3 and the instructors, if classes are filling up well ahead of time.
There are 3-5 students for each class. Classes are almost always filled. Most students are beginners trying out woodworking for the first time. The instructor should have enough experience to guide a beginner through the steps to turn a rough hardwood board into a cutting board in four hours, learning the basic use of all the power tools in our shop.
Factory 3 provides all tools, materials, and consumables, and promotes and schedules all classes.
Class fees paid by students are split 50-50 between Factory 3 and the instructor, after deducting a fee for materials. Most students pay the full class fee, but a small number pay a discounted fee, where the discount is shared 50-50 between the instructor and Factory 3. At current prices, the instructor will earn $275 for a full class with all students paying the maximum fee.
Factory 3 is also open to instructors' ideas for more advanced woodworking classes.
