The beginnings of the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-Op go back about 40 years. We are a full service boatyard with a talented crew, well-known for our traditional woodworking skills, from fine interior joinery on sail and motor yachts to major structural restoration on commercial fishing vessels. We design and install marine electronics and navigation systems, engines, propulsion, fuel and drive, heating, cooling, plumbing, steering, refrigeration and hydraulics, spars and rigging on steel, aluminum, fiberglass and wooden vessels. What We Are Looking For
The Marine Mechanic is a valuable member of our experienced team of marine electricians, marine systems technicians and marine plumbers. The typical tasks of a Marine Mechanic at PTSC include a bit of work on all marine systems, depending on customer needs, and your skill set and experience, from identifying, securing and installing electrical wires, to installing and repairing water systems and system components and engines. You will work in our mechanic shop and on boats at our facility in the The Port Townsend Boatyard at the Port of Port Townsend. The length, scope and complexity of each project varies and you will get to work alongside other marine trades professionals such as shipwrights, riggers, and metal workers.

Contributing to the success of the Marine Systems Technician are efficiency, tidiness, safety and speed, as well as communication skills and teamwork, physical strength and stamina, and the ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.

What You Might Be Asked To Do
Perform pipe fitting and basic plumbing
Arrange layout of fresh water systems and components such as pumps, tanks, valves, water heaters and fixtures
Arrange layout of gray and black water systems, and components including tanks, pumps, proper hoses, toilets, sinks, drains and vents
Install, repair, replace fresh, gray and black water systems and components
Troubleshoot non-working system components to determine necessary repairs
Install pex tubing for water and heating systems
Install and test complete propane systems, and test.
Install refrigeration systems
Install watermaker systems
Install fire protection systems
Install alarm systems
Install through hulls
Install transducers and fairing blocks
Carry out general carpentry, layout and mounting of equipment
Fabricate simple mounting brackets

Position Summary:

Roles and Responsibilities:

Generate 3D surface models of decks, liners, and small parts to be utilized for 5-axis milling and tooling design

Complete engineering of assigned areas of a boat including fiberglass design, purchased parts and hardware development

Design, engineer, and validate complex hinges and mechanisms for supplier fabrication using 3D models and 2D specification drawings

Provide accurate material and component specification for the sourcing of new and replacement components

Work with suppliers on the development of new systems and components to ensure continuous improvement in the quality and value of our boats systems

Ensure that new designs and components meet the cost, performance, and functional requirements of the new and enhancement boat programs

Generate engineering drawings for new designs and approve all prints for boat release

Generate, review, and approve engineering change notices (ECNs) as required

Participate in manufacturing integration activities to ensure successful launches of new products and technologies as well as continuous improvement activities

Support manufacturing and customer service on issues resolution

Ensure that designs have been fully validated and that they meet necessary system specifications and performance requirements

Utilize warranty data to identify issues related to mechanical systems for mitigation purposes

Provide technical evaluations and reports on issues for customer service and field problems

Requirements:
Education/Training

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related discipline

Experience and Skills:

The plan is to launch in early summer 2023, and to keep that schedule, we need help with first-time systems installation in this brand new boat. We also need some general carpentry work. It would be great if someone could do all of this, but perhaps you feel very comfortable with one particular aspect of the job. Please still get in touch, we could divide the work between those very skilled people.

Installation tasks would include:
—Nanni Diesel with remote filtration (guidance from the manufacturer is available), exhaust, through-hulls, hoses, shaft alignment, stuffing box
—12-volt batteries (LiFePO4 banks)
—12-volt electrical appliances (cabin lights, nav lights, cabin fans, nav gear, diesel heater, breaker panels, etc.)
—Plumbing for two sinks, bilge pumps, and a water maker

For all of these, a plan for placement will be in place and the equipment has already been purchased and is already in hand or on its way. The job here is to execute these plans and, if the candidate is able, to improve upon them and sweeten those plans as they go. We cannot provide housing on-site, but we can talk about what's possible in the area if you need to relocate for this temporary position.

Position Summary:

The Yacht Carpenter will be responsible for the layout/fabrication/repair of interior and exterior joinery as well as the maintenance and installation of teak decks and cap rails.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints

  • Plan, estimate, layout, and complete carpentry projects

  • Conduct repair work and installation of custom interior boat joinery

  • Assess the quality of woodwork and materials

  • Operate tools, machines, and other equipment

  • Read both Standard and Metric measurements

  • Assist supervisor with structural design, planning, layout, and installation

  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

Requirements: 

Required Education and Experience

Position Summary:

Outboard Mechanic (1 of 7)

Lyman-Morse in Camden is looking for an experienced outboard mechanic to join our team. Experience with all types of outboards, including outdrives and sterndrives, is desirable. Knowledge of various brands, troubleshooting, repairs, as well as new unit installations is also desirable. Electrical and mechanical system experience is also a plus. Anyone with experience with two-stroke or four-stroke engines is encouraged to apply. Training is available for the right candidate.

Hydraulic Technician (2 of 7)

Lyman-Morse in Thomaston is looking for a full-time hydraulic technician to work in the new build department. Should have knowledge of instrumentation techniques, basic understanding of electronics, hydraulics, fluid connectors, fittings, and the ability to read assembly drawings and hydraulic schematics as well as troubleshooting, test failures, and assist in corrective action.

Coatings and Finishing Technicians (3 of 7)

Lyman-Morse has openings at our Thomaston and Camden locations for people with finish skills to work in both the service and new build departments. Work will consist of surface preparations and coatings including fairing, sanding, painting, and other finishing procedures on boats and small parts. The products used can range from epoxy to polyurethanes, varnish, and other marine finishing products. Applications are done by brush as well as spraying. Experience required: 2-5 years of marine painting experience; may substitute high-end automotive prep and finish experience. Also working knowledge of airless pumps and traditional spray methods.

Marine Systems / Mechanical Technicians (4 of 7)

Lyman-Morse is seeking Marine Systems/Mechanical Technicians for our Thomaston and Camden locations. Looking for people with experience in all phases of plumbing and electrical systems as well as diesel and gas engines. ABYC certification a plus. Five or more years of experience preferred.

Composites Technicians (5 of 7)

Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston is looking to fill immediate positions in its composites department. Experience in open and closed molding, vacuum bagging, and infusion is preferred. Basic experience would be considered if open to additional training.
