Riggers possess and develop a broad range of technical skills including: splicing; sail tuning; rigging for crane lifts; metal working, welding and eventually crane operation. They possess and develop a thorough knowledge of working loads for lines, cables and blocks; as well as the mechanical maintenance and refurbishment of common sailing equipment such as winches, furlers masts, headsail furlers and windlasses. This broad set of skills allow the Riggers to take the lead on Yard projects involving sailboat rigging; anchoring; davits; cable steering systems; and removing / reinstalling hardware for mast and deck paint jobs.

The Rig Shop at Safe Harbor Great Island has greater capability than many yards. These capabilities include: weld repairs to masts; upgrades to Liesurefurl Booms; design and installation of sailing upgrades such as staysails and spinnaker sprit; and full mast replacements. The Rig Shop is a great place to develop and hone a wide variety of marine skills under the guidance of senior riggers with decades of experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Description
Applicant’s desired background to include outboard engine maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and repowers, as well as a familiarity with related vessel systems. Safe Harbor Kittery Point has two waterfront facilities in Kittery and Eliot, Maine that service, repair, and store recreational and commercial vessels, power and sail, ranging from 18' to +50'. We are dealers for Yamaha, Suzuki, and Mercury engines. OEM training opportunities are available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Inspect, maintain, and repair boats of all kinds
• Utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, running gear, and navigational equipment
• Install and test sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories
• Troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components
• Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including: acknowledging the budgeted time and time frame for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if required
• Overall knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems
• Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to: electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste), gas and diesel engines
• Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets
• Must possess own tools
• Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines
• Other duties as assigned by Manager

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
• Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
• Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
• Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.

Technical and Physical Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Technical school training preferred
• 5 years’ experience preferred
• ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
• Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
• Must carry own tools
• Ability to work in confined spaces
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
• Basic boat handling skills required
• Experience with both gas and diesel engines preferred
