Frequently Asked Questions

What is the latest update on the proposed acquisition by NMI?

The Landing School and Northeast Maritime Institute are working through the Memorandum of Understanding and due diligence phase. Both institutions are also working to secure the regulatory approvals required to complete the transaction.

While the process is not yet complete, both organizations remain committed to preserving The Landing School’s mission, programs, and legacy. We remain optimistic about the future and will continue to share updates as milestones are reached.

What does this mean for the future of The Landing School?

The proposed acquisition represents an opportunity not only to preserve The Landing School, but also to strengthen it for future generations.

NMI has expressed a commitment to supporting students, faculty, and staff while exploring opportunities for growth, expanded industry partnerships, workforce development initiatives, enhanced academic offerings, and long-term institutional stability.

While regulatory approvals are still required, both organizations are working toward a future that honors The Landing School’s legacy while creating new opportunities for students and the marine industry.

What exactly is being worked on right now?

The organizations are currently working through the MOU due diligence process and pursuing the regulatory approvals.

This work includes coordination with accrediting agencies, the Maine Department of Education, Maine Attorney General’s Office, Massachusetts Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education, veterans’ benefit authorities, and other regulatory organizations, as well as planning for academic continuity, student support services, financial aid, operations, and future growth opportunities.

Why is NMI interested in acquiring The Landing School?

NMI believes strongly in The Landing School’s educational mission and the value of hands-on experiential learning.

As Eric R. Dawicki, President of Northeast Maritime Institute, has shared, this effort is about more than preserving an institution. It is an opportunity to preserve a proud maritime legacy, support students and educators, strengthen workforce development, and create new opportunities for future generations of marine industry professionals.

Together, NMI and The Landing School see an extraordinary opportunity to build upon nearly five decades of educational excellence while creating a sustainable future for maritime craftsmanship, innovation, and career-focused education.

What does this mean for enrolled and Prospective students?

Our top priority remains providing continuity for students and ensuring they can pursue the education and career pathways they have chosen.

The Landing School continues to accept applications, enroll students, and support prospective students through the admissions process. Students with applications under review can expect admissions to continue as normal, and accepted students are encouraged to continue moving forward with their enrollment plans.

We will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available and encourage students and families to stay in contact with our Admissions team with any questions.

What should I do about housing and travel arrangements?

We recognize the need to make travel and housing arrangements as soon as possible, and we apologize for the disruption this has caused. The Landing School does not provide on-campus housing, and agreements are typically between students and private landlords. If you need our housing list or any other information or documentation, please contact Admissions.
