We are seeking Marine Carpenters to join our Hinckley team in Southwest Harbor, ME. The Marine Carpenter is responsible to perform intricate joiner, carpentry repair tasks on and off boats with minimal supervision and where no detailed plans may be available. Candidate is able to interpret yacht restoration work orders and plan projects to include developing bill of materials to complete the project. The carpenter is skilled in the operation and set-up of specialized equipment to achieve the desired result.

Responsibilities:

Transfer dimensions to marine plywood and other construction materials using tape measure, square and marking/layout devices
Make accurate cuts of wood and other materials using table and chop saws and other related power tools
Read and interpret blueprints
Troubleshoot leaks, squeaks, warps and make recommendations for appropriate repair
Layout, cut and assemble boat parts, such as doors, paneling, boxes, rails, and trim
Installs prefabricated/custom parts such as hatches, marine hardware, metal trim, seats and other parts
Applies caulking compound under spray rails, windshields, and around windows, using appropriate material to specified lengths and cements, crimps, screws, or taps into place
Performs basic fiberglass repair leveraging skilled knowledge and use of epoxies and vinylester resins or other adhesives to bond parts
Meets schedule and budget for projects
Understands yachting terminology, local and industry, e.g., port/starboard, gump (trim moulding) and bung (wood plug)
Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe, clean work area
Performs all work to Hinckley quality standards
Performs other related duties as necessary

Requirements:

High school or general equivalency degree (GED) required
Good working knowledge of most woodworking joints in the marine industry, such as scarf, sill splice, lap, finger, and dovetail
Use reading and writing, adding and subtracting of whole numbers and fractions
Basic computer skills
Knowledge, operation, and set-up of tape measure, square, hand saw, hand plane, table saw, and chop saw, planer, joiner, band saw, shaper, surface sander, router, vacuum pumps, and inverted router

Safe Harbor Great Island Systems Technicians will be trained through a combination of mentoring, ABYC courses and OEM Product Training to develop their knowledge of: maintenance procedures; installation application requirements and troubleshooting using both computer interfaces and diagnostic equipment such as multi-meters, refrigeration gauge sets, and product specific tooling.

Systems Technicians execute annual decommissioning and recommissioning procedures on the vessels stored at Safe Harbor Great Island. These procedures are IPad based and guide the technician through the process while capturing critical data for the customer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Execute boat commissioning and decommissioning procedures.
Utilize diagnostic equipment and Computer Interfaces to troubleshoot boat systems and components.
Repair, replace, and install new vessel systems and components.
Evaluate repair and installation jobs and prepare estimated for hours and materials.
Must possess own tools.
Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines.

We are seeking a part-time Woodworking Teacher (11-12.5 hours/week) to join our vibrant team for the summer of 2022. Our program runs eight weeks, Monday to Friday, starting June 27th and ends on August 19th. It is expected that teachers set up their room prior to the start of the program and are available for orientation the weekend of June 25th and 26th. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching children of a variety of ages and experience as a boat builder or wood craftsperson. Current teaching certification is a plus.

The class schedule is Tuesday and Thursday from 9 AM to 1:30 PM (Boat Building from 9 AM – 11 AM and Model Boat Making from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM), and Wednesdays from 9-10:30am and 10:30-12pm (weeks 1-8) with a third section from 12:30-2pm on weeks 3-6 (July 11-August5). Boat Building is designed for kids, ages 9+, to build a skiff over the course of the summer – with the understanding that it may not be fully completed by the end of the season. Model Boat Building is designed as a class where kids will build their own model boat within the weekly class. The Wednesday classes are for ages 7-10 and focus on small woodworking tasks (birdhouses, back scratchers, etc) that can be completed in a single 1.5 hour session. Class sizes are small and we strive to incorporate our beautiful surroundings into the content of classes as often as possible.

MJM Yachts builds a world renowned Down East style motor yacht focused on exceptional stability, high-tech composite construction, fuel efficiencies and live aboard comfort. These luxury performance yachts, 29’ to 50’, provide owners with both outboard and inboard models. MJM Yachts is the “brain child” of J Boats founder Bob Johnstone and his need to transition from sailboats to motor yachts as he and his wife Mary got older. The signature MJM look comes from a collaboration between Peter Gladstone (former CEO of Sunfish Laser and Gunboat), Doug Zurn and Boston Boatworks.

For the last 20 years MJMs have been manufactured at Boston Boatworks. Now, the production facility is transitioning to a new facility located off the Pamlico River in Washington, NC. Washington, NC offers a historic, quaint downtown with plenty of waterfront to explore and only 30 minutes from college town of Greenville, 45 minutes from New Bern and 1 ½ hours to the big city of Raleigh/Durham.

Position Profile –

MJM Yachts seeks a highly-organized Composites Engineer to act as a liaison between engineering and production. This key leadership role must have a strong understanding of all types of lamination with a focus on infusion and epoxy. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Composites Engineer will be a strong communicator with an engineering mentality who can effectively communicate both written and verbal lamination procedures and processes. The Composites Engineer will process the calculations for lamination schedules for both new models and changes to current models.

Additional responsibilities include:
• Quality control of the lamination process
• Responsible for managing projects within the area of expertise and working closely with the Engineering and Production teams
• Establish best practices within a large/high volume lamination department
• Thorough understanding of traditional laminating techniques and procedures, as well as the mechanics of advanced composite construction, including all the available fabrics, cloth and resins, chopper gun, hand lay.
• Coordinates to drive sustainable process and quality improvements, thus reducing cost and increasing lamination efficiencies.
• Coordinate with vendors to develop lamination kits for production.


Qualifications –
• 5+ years experience in the FRP/Lamination field
• Engineering Degree preferred
• Ability to speak Spanish a plus

Compensation –

Compensation to include a competitive salary with a company benefits package to include 70% company paid family healthcare, 401k and vacation time.
